Passage One
Questions 361 to 35 are based on the following passage:
Several theories have tried to explain why women aren’t as good at chess (国际象棋) as men. Some state that women are not good at spatial (空间的) imagination. Some even suggest that women find it difficult to concentrate because they are programmed by Nature to hear the cry of a child!
Laslo Polgar from Hungary has proved these theories wrong by turning his daughters Zsusza, Zsofia and Judit into top chess players. The sisters recently beat a strong Russian team. Polgar has used the new “hot-house” training techniques to educate his children. At first he did consider producing musicians, but decided chess was cheaper. He says his techniques can be used in training other types of people, but what matters is to start very early. From the age of four the girls trained in chess and languages. They hardly went to school and were educated at home.
Of the three, Judit is the most remarkable: at the age of twelve she beat senior male players to become an international grand master. This is like a woman winning a gold medal in a men’s event in the Olympics. One explanation of her success is that she has a natural grasp of the position of a game. She does not have to think long, but can make quick moves in the same way born musician “sees” music.
Hot-housing in sport has produced successes, but it has its victims too. Is it a good thing to use children as little white in an experiment? Polgar has nearly achieved his dream of producing a woman world champion, but at what future cost to his children?
