Subject: Wonderful Time in the Sonoran Desert

Dear Grandparents,

I promised to write, so …

①I am enjoying my trip to the Sonoran Desert.

②The Sonoran Desert is a dry area in the American Southwest. It covers about 100,000 square miles in parts of California, Arizona, and Mexico. Some parts of the Sonoran Desert may not have rain for one or two years. Other parts have sudden summer rainstorms. Summer in Sonoran Desert is very very hot. The temperature is often more than 100 degrees during the day. Even in the winter, the temperature is usually very high. But desert plants and animals have special ways tosurvive in such an environment with very little water in very hot weather.

③Today, a group of us put on our hats, sunscreen, and cool clothing and went on a nature hike.We had a wonderful time.

④We saw many unique（独一无二的） plants and animals. The Saguaro cactus is unique to this area and can live for 200 years! I must admit I was a little nervous when we ran into a rattlesnake（响尾蛇）. Although I have not seen one on our travels, I learned that the Gila Monster is not a monster at all, but one of only two venomous（有毒的）lizards in the world.

⑤We were told not to put our hands where we could see them. Our guide did not want anyone to be stung by a scorpion（蝎子）. Thankfully, the only scorpions I have seen have been in a cage!

⑥The best part of my hike was when I got to sit and watch a desert tortoise that was eating a
