William Shakespeare: We’ve definitely heard of him! He wrote Hamlet, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, didn’t he? I saw the film Shakespeare in Love.

William Wordsworth: I know he was a Romantic poet, a friend of Coleridge and Keats. He lived in that small cottage in the Lake District with his wife and sister. He went to France and supported the French Revolution because he was in favour of rights of the poor and ordinary people, but later he saw what happened in France and became a lot more conservative. He also loved nature.

Jane Austen: She wrote Pride and Prejudice. I saw the film; it’s a good story. Some of her other novels have been made into films, eg Sense and Sensibility and Emma. I haven’t actually read the books but I saw the films.

The Bronte sisters: Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte wrote Wuthering Heights—I saw the films—they were governesses but one of them got married just before she died.

JRR Tolkien: He wrote The Lord of the Rings. He was a Professor of English and made up these stories full of fantasies and the struggle between good and evil. I suppose he was bored with life at university!
