教学过程:

Step One: Fast reading

Ask the students to tell what they notice about how the text is organized.

Ask questions like

What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

What are the diagrams for?

Why are there two quotes?

What is the purpose of the last paragraph of the article?

You can often get an idea of what a magazine article is about by glancing at the title, the first paragraph, the diagrams, and the enlarged quotes. This is a useful skill to develop as students can quickly decide whether they want to read a text more carefully or not. Find out from students what kind of information they expect to find in the reading passage by asking them questions like:

What does the title tell you about the content of the article?

What dies the first paragraph tell you about the content of the article?

What kind of diagrams are in the article? What are they about?

What are the two quotes about?

Step Two: Second Reading

Tell students that they are going to scan the article for specific information. They should not read every word as they do not need to understand everything. Tell them to run their eyes along the lines of the article to find the information.

Read through Exercise 1 in the comprehending section with students.

Ask students where they think they will find the answers to the first and second questions. It is a useful skill to be able to think of arguments for a position you don’t really believe in.

Tell groups to extract the arguments from the article and put tem in their own words, they can also add other arguments of their own.
