Use this checklist to make sure you are prepared for the ARC discussion.

Use it to improve your work when you receive feedback from your peers, tutor or Turnitin.

Read the text carefully more than once in English to understand it generally.





Annotate the text to help you understand it, and make notes for each paragraph (short text) or section (long text).





Summarise each paragraph or section, using your notes to help .





Use a key example when a point is difficult to understand.





Write your summary in your own words, using linking words to combine points.





Check that your summary is not too long (no more than 4 minutes to say) or too short (less than 2 minutes to say).





Write 4 deep comprehension questions that cover important ideas in the text.





Write 4 discussion questions that encourage other students to share their opinions about ideas in the text.





Use phrases such as “according to the authors” or “what is your opinion of” to guide students to which is comprehension or discussion question.

Annotate the text, and make notes of any ideas that are interesting or remind you of something you have learned or heard/read about.





List two or more connections to important ideas in the text in each section of PART 1. One or two sentences to briefly explain these is enough here.





Choose two items from PART 1, focussing on ideas that are important to explain, interesting or controversial points in the text.





Describe the idea from the text that you are making the link to in your own words.





Show where your information comes from by giving a (working!) URL or an APA reference for an event in the news or history. State which course/module you studied and where you studied it.





Describe what you have studied or have heard/read about in your own words. You can write 300 - 400 words for each part.





Explain why you think it is important for other ARC group members to know about this connection. This helps it to be meaningful.





Do a word count for each entry in PART 2, making sure it is no more than 400 word, not including the APA reference/URL link





Practise telling your PART 2 connections to a friend. Do they look interested?
