Complete the checklist after each ARC discussion.

Use this checklist to make sure you are prepared for the ARC discussion.

Use it to improve your work when you receive feedback from your peers, tutor or Turnitin.

Read the text carefully more than once in English to understand it generally.





Annotate the text to help you understand it, and make notes for each paragraph (short text) or section (long text).





Summarise each paragraph or section, using your notes to help .





Use a key example when a point is difficult to understand.





Write your summary in your own words, using linking words to combine points.





Check that your summary is not too long (no more than 4 minutes to say) or too short (less than 2 minutes to say).





Write 4 deep comprehension questions that cover important ideas in the text.





Write 4 discussion questions that encourage other students to share their opinions about ideas in the text.





Use phrases such as “according to the authors” or “what is your opinion of” to guide students to which is comprehension or discussion question.





Practise saying your summary. Ask a friend to try to answer your questions. Can they answer them? If not, you may need to rewrite them for clarity.
