Teaching plan for 7A Unit 4 Reading 1

Topic: Reading 1 School life , 7A Unit 4 My day

Analysis of the teaching material and students:

The reading material is an email from Millie to her online friend Tommy about her school life. In the email, Millie introduces something about her school name, school day and lessons, friends and activities. There are only two sentences about her love and affection to her school. There are no difficult vocabularies or sentences in the email, so the students may not have lots of trouble understanding the main information of it. What’s more difficult and important is to lead them to the way of understanding Millie’s love to her school and school life. Anyway, school life is an interesting topic for the new students of Grade7. Therefore, reading this letter is a good chance for our students to find out and feel the happiness of their own school life.

Teaching aims:

At the end of the class, the students are expected to

a. get the basic information from the top of an email: to/ from/ subject.

b. predict before reading and find out the key information through paying attention to the topic sentence of each paragraph.

c. get the details about Millie’s school life and feel Millie’s affection to her school through thinking further about the details.

d. complete a phone interview and create a TV video for the famous TV programme called Grade One from Hunan TV station.

e. discuss and conclude what makes a happy school life and share their opinions about what they will do to create their happy school life.

Important points about the lesson:

Get the main information about Millie’s school life through completing some mind maps

and forms.

Complete the phone interview and create a TV video about Millie’s school life through

retelling the email and acting in groups.

Difficult points about the lesson:

Think further about some details to understand Millie’s love to her school and school life;

Form their own understanding about how to have a happy school life and share their

opinions in class.

Design conception:

Reading is a procedure of language learning and information acquiring. During the procedure, we should not only teach the students how to get the key information and details of a passage through practising different reading skills, but also pay much attention to train the students how to think further to get the deep intention and affection of the writer. Through the practice of detailed reading and deep reading, the students’ abilities of logical, imaginative and creative thinking should be improved in class teaching.

Blueprint for this lesson:

First, lead the students to the topic through showing them an email I have just got. Then, tell them today we will learn an email and let the students learn how to get the basic information from the top of an email. After that, let the students have a prediction about what will be talked in the email and encourage them to check if their predictions are right through fast reading. Next, the students try to get the details about Millie’s school life through detailed reading. During the detailed reading, the students need to think further and actively to feel Millie’s happy life at school and analyse the reason why she can feel happy at school. Following that, in order to retell the key information and train the students’ creative thinking, I plan to let the students complete the phone interview and act out Millie’s school life for a TV programme, Grade one. Finally, encourage the students to make a conclusion about what they have learned from Millie and share their opinions about how to have a happy school life.

Teaching procedures:

Step One Guide in

Tell the students I am very happy today because I have got an email from my best friend. Show the email and ask: Who writes the letter to me? What is it about?



(The purpose: To teach the students to learn how to get some basic information from the top of an email.)

Tell the students we will read another interesting email from Millie.

Step Two Fast reading

Fast reading1

Let the students read quickly to get some basic information about the email: Who is the letter to? What is it about?



(The purpose: Let the students practise getting basic information from the top of an email.)

Predict for Millie’s school life

Give the student a question and let them predict before reading: What do you want to know about Millie’s school life?



(The purpose: Let the students form the habit of predicting before reading and train the students’ ability of divergent thinking.)

Fast Reading 2

Students read over the whole email quickly and check if they can read all they want to know about Millie’s school life.



(The purpose: The students can get the key point of each paragraph while they are checking if their predictions are right.)

Step Three Reading for details

Para 1 School name

Read Para 1 and answer:Which school does Millie study at?

Para 2 School days and lessons

Read Para 2 and put the items in right order.



(The purpose: To train the accuracy of thinking through reading details )

Read and further think:

Give some questions:

What subject does Millie like best? (English)

Why?(Because she is good at it.)

How can she be so good at English? Can you have a guess?

(Maybe she works hard/ … )

Millie doesn’t tell us anything about her English teacher, but can your imagine something about her English teacher?

What is your favourite subject? Why?

How do you feel when you study it?

So, how does Millie feel when she is having an English class?

(The purpose: To train the students abilities of logical thinking and imagination .)

Para 3 Friends at school

Read Para 3 and complete the mind map.



Think further.

Questions: How does Millie feel when she plays with her friends?

Do you have many friends at school? What do you often do with friends?

How do you feel when you are with your friends?

(The purpose: To lead the students to the way of feeling Millie’s feelings at school and train their logical thinking.)

Para4 Activities at school

Read Para 4 quickly and find out what activities Millie does at school to complete the mind map.



Think further:How does Millie feel when she does the school activities? What activities do you do at school? How do you feel? What do you think of school activities? What do they mean to students?

(The purpose: To train the students’ abilities of divergent and creative thinking.)

Para 5 Millie’s feelings

Read and answer: How does Millie feel at school?

Step Four Have a discussion

Read the email aloud after mp3.

Work in groups to have a discussion: Why can Millie always have a good time at school? What makes a happy school life ?



Step Five Complete a phone interview

A very famous TV programme called Grade One want to make a special season of TV show about school life in Grade One of a Middle school. They choose Sunshine Middle school and the director calls Millie to learn about her school life.

A: Hello, Millie. I am from the TV show , Grade One. We are very interested in your school life. When does your school _______?

B: At eight. I _______________ first and then My lessons ______ at 8:15.

A: What’s your favourite subject?

B: I ______ English best because I ________________it.

A: Do you have many friends at school?

B: Yes, they are ______ to me and we often _______________

or ___________ after class.

A: That’s great! What clubs or teams do you take part in at school?

B: I am in _________________ and we read books __________ a week. I am also _______________ the school volleyball team.

A: Oh, you have a wonderful life at school!

B: Yes, I love my school.

Step Six Make a TV video

After the phone interview, the director is very interested in Millie’s school and her school life. He decides to make a TV video about Millie’s school life. Students work in group of 6 to act out Millie’s school life. Step Seven Share what you learn and feel

Have a free talk to make a conclusion: What should we do to have a happy school life?

Homework:

Complete and perfect your group acting about Millie’s school life;

Make a short video about your school life and share it on your QQ zone.
