iExplore 1 – Reading: Main Idea and Structure

/

The text is divided into 4 parts.

/

/

(question 1, 4)

4. New lesson – Structure: Body/Main part of the text (20 minutes)

Now,we'll take a close look at the main part of the story. In paragraph two and three, that is Part Two, the author described the problem she went into. In Part Three, including paragraphs four and five, she tells how she solved the problem. Both problems and solutions are presented from two aspects: behavior and mental activities.

/

And many examples are given to illustrate that. In Part Two, she recalls the various problems encountered in the previous semester. For example,“I couldn't even walk into the dining hall by myself.” This example is about behavior, and shows us that she tried to cut herself off from the outside world. Can you find more examples of this kind? How did she avoid meeting people?” She did most of her homework in her room. She ordered take-out food unless her hall mates could have dinner with her. She leaned heavily on her parents to vent about her life and asked for advice. (Well done.)

In addition to behaviors, the author’s problems are also reflected in her mental activities, such as feelings, thoughts and attitudes. Can you find examples of her mental activites? Here is an example about her feelings of dining hall. The dining hall was “too large and intimidating, the faces are too unfamiliar, and my own place in college was unknown to me.”Can you find another example from paragraph 2 or 3?“I was too scared to poke my head out of my shell and explore on my own.”She was scared. (Good example.)

/

Now,let's move on to Part Three. In this part, the author illustrates her current behavior and mental activities, which are remarkably different from before. From these details,we can see the huge transformation she had undergone. Similarly, the author describes her changes in terms of behavior and mental activities. At the beginning of paragraph 5,the author says she “will walk into the dining hall all by herself, and find a table among the masses quite comfortably.”She “can also run into a friend and get caught up in a lengthy conversation.”Compared with her behavior in the previous semester, this is indeed a big difference. At the same time, her thoughts and feelings have undergone big changes too. What does she say about her mental activities?Yes, there are examples in paragraph 5. “If I ran into a friend and get caught up in a conversation,I love it.”“When I bump into a friend,or watch a show with friends, I'm extremely happy.”Now we are truly happy for the author.

/

Do you know how she solved the problem? How did she change her way?Can you find this key information from the text? She chose to open herself up to the outside world. But why? What urged her to make this decision? She learned that it is impossible to find her place in the world that she refuses to go into, so she decided to reach out to meet people. (You are right.) This is what she learned from her experience, and what she wants the readers to learn.

/

That's all for the main idea and structure of the text. I hope you are clear about them. There is one more thing I want to mention about the text. It is the descriptive adjectives the author uses throughout the whole story. She uses many adjectives to describe her feelings or surroundings,to provide precise Information, and express ideas more clearly and vividly.

/

A good example is paragraph 2.

/

Please select the proper adjectives from the box to complete the paragraph.

(3, 6, 1, 2, 5, 5, 4) It is obvious that with the help of these adjectives, the author can describe her feelings and surroundings in great detail. And readers can get a clear picture of the author’s situations. I hope you will practice using this magic skill later, in your speech for unit task (Unit Project). Okay, it's time to finish the main idea, and the structure of the text. We will learn some useful words and expressions in the following section.

4. iExplore 1 - Language Building (30 minutes)

Let’s go to the language building of iExplore 1. Some of you left messages to me, saying that you have problems using these words or expressions.

/

Well, don’t worry. We are going to learn them one by one. The first word, it's vent. It is from paragraph 3. /

In the text, the author expresses her bad feelings about college life to her parents. Another example, can you use “vent” to translate the Chinese part of this sentence? (vent your anger on me) Could you please read the whole sentence?(Yes. Please don't shout. There's no need to vent your anger on me.) Very good. In this example,“vent” means to express negative feelings strongly.

Now the second word, poke, it is also from paragraph 3.

/

The original meaning of poke is to move or push something through a space or opening. But if you poke your head through an opening, you push it through,so that you can see something more easily. In this sentence, the author compares herself to a turtle, and her dormroom, the turtle’s shell. The expression is used figuratively, meaning,to go out of my room and get contact with my surroundings. Let's look at another example. Don't let your kid poke his head out of the window. It is too dangerous. Can you translate the sentence into Chinese?(Yes. 别让你的孩子把头伸出窗外。太危险了。)

Well, the 3rd expression is cut off. It is from paragraph 4, and it's often used as cut off from….

/

In the text, the author says,“I stay in my room, instead of going out and sticking new relationships. I cut myself off from so many potential friendships.” The expression means to prevent somebody or something from leaving or reaching a place or communicating with people. In the text, this sentence means I stayed alone. I did not communicate with other students. If I had not behaved the way I did,I might have many friends. Let's look at another example. Since our last meeting, you've cut yourself off from all your old friends. You wish to have nothing more to do with them. Can you make up a sentence by using the expression “cut off”? (This expression reminds me of a sad experience. When I broke up with my ex-girlfriend,I was so depressed thatI completely cut myself off from the outside world. This expression could vividly describe my feelings of this despair and isolation at the time.) (Come on,David. Let bygones be bygones. You will meet your Miss Right soon.) Cheer up,David.

We will learn another word, random. This word is used as an adjective in paragraph 5.

/

“But usually, before that can even happen, I ran into a friend and get caught up in a lengthy conversation about something completely random.” Random means happening or chosen without any definite aim or pattern. Roughly, this sentence means having decided to open herself up,seek new relationship, the author now feels comfortable to talk with friends about whatever comes to their mind whenever and wherever they meet. (Teacher, it's similar to at random?) Yes. I'm about to introduce this phrase to you.

/

At random, also emphasize doing something without any regular pattern. For example,we received many answers, and we picked some at random. Now,can you rewrite this sentence with “random”? Remember,at random,is like an adverb, used to modify the verb “pick”. But random is an adjective that should be used to modify a noun.

/

Here are the answers. Both sentences are correct. In the first one, random modifies selection, in the second one, it modifies answers. Did you do it correctly?

Next expression we’ll discuss is bump into. It is also from paragraph 5.

/

“In those moments, when I bump into a friend I haven't seen in a few days, I'm extremely happy.”This expression is synonymous with run into, to meet s 内容过长,仅展示头部和尾部部分文字预览,全文请查看图片预览。 to finish a few tasks before moving on to the next class.
